2 weeks old and Kate’s wedding

DSC_8947

Derek turned two weeks old on Thursday. At his doctor appointment he weighed 8lbs 12oz, which falls in the 50th percentile. He is doing great, because when we left the hospital he weighed 6lbs 15oz! Something worth mentioning–a huge praise of thanksgiving–is that when Derek was born the doctor said the cord was wrapped around his neck. He said we made the best decision to go ahead with the scheduled surgery, because most likely that cord would have kept Derek from dropping low enough for a successful VBAC. Thank you, Lord, for taking care of us! He really has been an easy and quiet baby.

He had his days and nights mixed up a bit the first couple of nights home, but since then he’s been sleeping pretty well at night. Jake is doing great with him, too. He loves to sit and hold him (will easily sit with him for 20-30 minutes and not want to let him go) and he loves to give him kisses! He’s already such a great big brother and says, “That’s my baby Derek.”

I am still recovering. Have been slowed down a bit by a UTI that won’t seem to go away. And I’m still sore from surgery, but I am moving around much better. I’m anxious to be able to lift Jakob up again and play with him like normal. I miss him so much. He is in College Station this week, because we are sorting and packing up the last of our stuff. We move out of our house this weekend. I decided yesterday that Derek and I will join Jake in CS tomorrow. It’s true, I’m running away! My only responsibilities right now are to write this post and sort out my clothes to pack my bag for Costa Rica. Everything else I’m leaving behind for Wes to pack up. It’s way too overwhelming for me to handle right now.

One last thing. On Saturday, Derek made his first road trip. Kate got married! So, $85 in dress alterations later, we packed up and went to Hamilton. I was sad to miss out on the rehearsal and all the pre-wedding fun, but in order for me to not pass out as they made their vows to each other, I figured I should take it as easy as possible. We didn’t get many pictures at the wedding, but it was really great to see some friends one last time before we head out. Congratulations Kate and Lane! Your wedding was beautiful. We love you and are very happy for you.

5 days old

Last night we had a chance to take a few pictures of the new kid that we just had to share.

When does late night become early morning?

Well… i guess we’re getting settled into our life as a family of four, and things are good. It’s obvious that things are a bit different around here. Take tonight for example… Stacy said something to me that she hasn’t said in 5 months. “I’m cold.” Back to the old Stacy with no 7 lb 8 oz heater in her belly.

Last night, our first night at home, was an eventful one. Derek slept all afternoon and then apparently felt like staying up for a while… like 4:30 in the morning. Fortunately, Gran and Granddad were here and let us sleep in this morning because Jake was up bright and early, as usual… 5:45 in the morning time. Moving forward, we’re going to need a little more than an hour and fifteen minutes between when new kid goes to bed and the toddler wakes up.

Let’s hope tonight is better.

Home Sweet Home

This morning we woke up from our restful 2 hours of sleep and both Stacy and Derek got checked out by their doctors and were given the green light to go home. A bunch of paper work, forms filled out, instructions from the nurse and doctors and some very serious warnings about shaking babies and they let us go. Seriously, why is it that you have to take a test and have a license to drive a car but they don’t care if you can spell your name or not if you have a baby?

Anyways, we’re home. We get to sleep in our bed tonight. We’re a family of four under the same roof. Times are good.

Happy 5th of July!

Things are going great for our new family of four. Derek temperature was a little elevated yesterday… but things a better today. Who knew he wouldn’t get so hot with 1 blanket instead of 2? Partly that was because he had those crazy light thingies.

But, alas, the Glo Worm is no more. Derek’s billirubin is back to normal… woo hoo.

As for his voice, the Dr. said it could be lot’s of things… swelling, a paralyzed vocal cord, or something else. Basically, if it doesn’t get better in a couple of weeks the he’ll see a ear, nose and throat doctor. But, it will probably get better on its own.

More pictures from yesterday here.

We’ve had lots of visitors… tons of family and friends. It’s been great. If all goes according to the current schedule, we’ll be going home tomorrow morning.
